Kurt Cobain - Alone in the fame

Seattle based photographer Karen Mason Blair built lasting friendships with the musicians that kept her close to the action and was lucky enough to be right in front of many 90’s bands before they took off. She captured images of her music “family” – some of the world’s biggest rock bands bred in Seattle – from Alice in Chains’ first session for Rolling Stone; to Pearl Jam’s first concert, Nirvana wearing Santa hats, Soundgarden’s first session with bassist Ben Shepherd; in addition to Mother Love Bone etc..

Throughout her career as an entertainment photographer, her immersive and award-winning photos have appeared on Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Joan Jett, and Radiohead albums and many more. She published her first book titled “The Flannel Years”. Foreword by Krist Novoselic bass player for Nirvana.  Her photo of Kurt and Krist in Santa hats is on the album “In Utero”. Francis Bean Cobain recently chose Karen’s photo for the cover of Nirvana’s 2019 "Live at the Paramount", vinyl album.

Karen Mason Blair’s insider rapport with grunge icons both in the middle of the stage, and behind these scenes, gives viewers a unique perspective of the fun times and smiling faces. “We were all having the time of our lives” Karen explains “I considered them my good friends, but still felt like a fan girl, with a camera”.
